The knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup has been thrilling so far and Wednesday’s matchup between England and DR Congo was no different.

DR Congo struck early to take a 1-0 lead when Brian Cipenga found the net off an assist from Chancel Mbemba in the seventh minute.

The rest of the first half was a defensive masterclass led by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. He made save after save against England to protect the net and keep DR Congo in front.

After keeping England scoreless through the first half, Mpasi kept his momentum going early in the second half, rejecting several more shots.

DR Congo’s strong defense held up until the 75th minute, when Harry Kane came up big for England with the equalizer.

As the final portion of the second half played out, it had looked like the match would go to extra time. But in the 86th minute, Kane dissected the defense again to secure a brace and give England a 2-1 advantage.

Near the end of stoppage time, Yoane Wissa had a chance to tie it for DR Congo after drawing a foul from Jude Bellingham, but hie fee kick went just over the net.

Moments later, the final whistle was blown and England advanced to the Round of 16, albeit in a much more difficult fashion than anticipated.
