The Green Bay Packers are keeping running back Josh Jacobs on the roster while the NFL investigates newly disclosed allegations of physical and verbal abuse involving multiple women — allegations that predate his May 23 arrest.

Jacobs pleaded no contest in September to two misdemeanor charges tied to that May incident: battery, resulting in a $1,000 fine and conviction, and damage to property, for which he received a deferred judgment. He served six games on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list and returned in Week 7. He has played in the Packers’ past two games.

Coach Matt LaFleur said Monday, “We’re going to allow the NFL to do its process, but I would anticipate him being a member of us moving forward.” He declined to elaborate when asked why the team is maintaining its support.

Jacobs’ attorneys labeled the newly revealed claims “unsupported and stale” in a Sunday statement. The Hobart/Lawrence Police Department in Wisconsin released records last week related to the May 23 arrest, which showed three women came forward after that incident.

In his two games since returning, Jacobs has rushed 32 times for 75 yards and one touchdown, and caught 11 passes for 68 yards and two scores. The Packers rank last in the NFL in rushing offense.

LaFleur confirmed he spoke with Jacobs about the running back’s Thursday night touchdown celebration against the Carolina Panthers, during which Jacobs placed his hands behind his back. Jacobs said the gesture referenced the gospel song “Break Every Chain.” LaFleur said he learned of it only after reviewing game film and declined to discuss the substance of their private conversation.
