Minnesota Vikings legend Joey Browner has died at the age of 65, the team announced on Sunday. They did not disclose a cause of death.
“We’ve lost a great friend and one of the best Vikings teammates,” former Vikings tight end Steve Jordan said. “God blessed Joey with phenomenal talent and a big heart to love people and be a beacon of positivity. Truly, he will be missed.”
Browner had a historic career as a defensive back for the Vikings and still ranks fifth all-time on the team’s all-time interception list. He was a first-round pick out of USC in 1983 and went on to play nine seasons for the Vikings and one season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Browner reached the Pro Bowl in six consecutive seasons with Minnesota while being named a first-team All-Pro three times.
He was later named to the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 1980s and was inducted into the Vikings’ Ring of Honor in 2013.
