Ja Morant breaks silence on $75K fine: ‘I wasn’t surprised’

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has been caught up in several controversies over the last few seasons, almost all of them involving guns in some way. After receiving a warning from the league for making gun gestures on the court, Morant repeated the celebration and was fined $75,000 by the NBA as a result.

When asked about it on Thursday, Morant said he wasn’t shocked.

“You really want to know?” Morant asked. “I wasn’t surprised. Just was showing people what’s been evident pretty much for the last two years.”

He didn’t elaborate much further, likely in an effort to avoid another fine. Instead, Morant came up with a new celebration, one in which he mimics a grenade toss into the stands. He first used the new celebration against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.

“That’s my celebration now until somebody else got a problem with it, and I’ll find another one,” Morant said.
