Ehlers scores in OT as Hurricanes win Game 2 over Canadiens

May 23, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; The Carolina Hurricanes celebrate after scoring an overtime goal against the Montréal Canadiens in game two of the Eastern Conferene Final of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Lenovo Center, James Guillory-IMAGN IMAGES

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2, courtesy of Nikolaj Ehlers‘ overtime winner — their first conference final win at home since June 1, 2006.

Eric Robinson opened the scoring early for Carolina with his second goal of the series off a nifty one-handed tip to make it 1-0 two and a half minutes into the game.

Similar to Game 1, the Hurricanes failed to build any positive momentum from the early goal, as Josh Anderson tied it up halfway through the first. Carolina’s exits have been a problem against Montreal’s heavy wingers along the wall.

Outside of the goal, Carolina did an excellent job setting up its cycle in the period and limiting Montreal’s transition play compared to the first game. The overaggression from the first game seemed to have been addressed by head coach Rod Brind’Amour, with the Hurricanes registering a 73% expected goals for percentage in the first.

Ehlers showed the dazzling talent that made him the most sought-after free agent last summer, walking through Cole Caufield before squeaking it five-hole to regain the lead for Carolina.

The second was much of the same for the Canadiens, who only recorded three shots in the period as they couldn’t break the Hurricanes’ structure through the neutral zone.
Carolina sat back defensively in the third period, a habit they’ve fallen into all season long with the lead. Montreal seemed to finally break through Carolina’s structure, with Anderson tying the game with seven minutes to go.
The play started with Jakub Dobeš breaking the puck out of the zone before Carolina could set up its forecheck.
Overtime started as a feeling-out process, with neither side giving an inch or taking any sort of risk, until Ehlers took the game into his own hands.
He caught Noah Dobson flat-footed, fresh off a change, and turned on the afterburners before putting it past Dobeš to ice the game.
It was Ehlers’ best game as a Hurricane, and a testament to the game-breaking ability that the Hurricanes have desperately needed up front for years.
Game 3 will be in Montreal on Monday.
