Former MLB player enrolls at SMU to play college football

Back in 2018, MLB veteran Jordyn Adams was the No. 3 wide receiver in his graduating class, ranked just behind future NFL stars Amon-Ra St. Brown and Ja’Marr Chase.

Now he’ll return to football, this time at the collegiate level. According to team reporter Billy Embody, Adams has decided to enroll at SMU and begin his college football career.

Adams had initially committed to playing both football and baseball for the UNC Tar Heels, but decided against college when the Los Angeles Angels selected him 17th overall in the 2018 MLB Draft.

Since then, he’s spent most of his time in the minor leagues, racking up 678 games played at that level. In the minor leagues, he recorded 55 home runs and 304 RBIs in nearly 2,500 at-bats.

Over the last three seasons, he’s played in 38 MLB games for several teams.

At 26-year-old, Adams joins an SMU team with shaky college eligibility. Since he never actually enrolled at UNC, his eligibility clock technically never started.

But a new proposal currently being discussed would implement a five-for-five eligibility system. Under these new rules, athletes would have five years of eligibility starting from when they graduate high school or whenever they turn 19, whichever comes first.

If these system is put into place, Adam’ eligibility will be up in the air.

A number of professional baseball players have made the switch to college football in the past. Most notably, Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke took home the Heisman Trophy in 2000 after spending six years playing professional baseball.
