Everton defeated Newcastle United 1-0 in a Premier League match at St James’ Park on Monday.

Thierno Barry scored the only goal shortly after halftime. Tyrique George fired a low shot from the left that slipped under goalkeeper Lukás Hornícek, and Barry tapped in the loose ball. The goal stood after VAR reviewed two close offside challenges.

Newcastle finished with 10 men when substitute Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards in stoppage time.

The win ended Everton’s three-game Premier League winless run. They moved to seventh in the table; Newcastle dropped to 13th.

Monday’s match came four days after Everton’s Carabao Cup fourth-round win over Newcastle.

Both sides made two changes from that cup match: Anthony Elanga and Joelinton started for Newcastle; Jarrad Branthwaite and Harrison Armstrong started for Everton.

Harvey Barnes created several chances for Newcastle, including a curling shot wide and a cross that struck the post. Jordan Pickford made multiple saves, including stopping Yoane Wissa in the 90th minute. Lukás Hornícek denied Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jake O’Brien from a set piece and resulting corner.

Everton’s defense held firm throughout. James Tarkowski blocked a Joelinton effort, and Fabian Schär fired over the bar.
