The 62nd annual Grammy Awards should have been a special night for Chappelle, who happened to win Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his comedy special, Dave Chappelle: Sticks and Stones.

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards took place on January 20, 2020. This was the same day Kobe, his daughter Gianna, and seven others lost their lives in a helicopter crash.

Chappelle ended up skipping the Grammys as he couldn’t deal with Kobe’s passing.

“I loved Kobe Bryant. Died the day I won a Grammy, he died. That’s why I didn’t show up at the Grammys because Kobe died. They had both of his f*ckin’ jersey numbers hanging up. Eight. Twenty-four. That’s my birthday. I cried like a baby.”

Chappelle, along with the rest of the NBA world, still mourns the tragic loss of Kobe. Still, the memories he left us all still shine brightly, as his Mamba Mentality will never fade away.
