Former NFL runningback Chris Johnson revealed an ALS diagnosis this week, appearing on “Good Morning America” to speak on his experience.

He revealed that he was diagnosed with the disease, which progressively hinders one’s ability to move and speak, in 2025.

Now, Johnson and several other player are bringing back the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge quickly went viral over a decade ago and consists of the participant having a bucket of ice water poured on their head.

It was created to bring awareness to ALS and raise money for research, ultimately raising roughly $220 million worldwide. Johnson took to social media on Wednesday with a video of his daughter taking part in the challenge.

It wasn’t long before NFL legend Marshawn Lynch completed the challenge and showed his support.

Later on, former Indianapolis Colts runningback Edgerrin James decided to put his own twist on the challenge.

In his video, he poured a bucket of money over his head before explaining that he was donating $9,651 to the cause, matching Johnson’s NFL career rushing yard total.

Johnson also revealed that he is taking part in a clinical trial using experimental treatments while noting that the disease doesn’t change who he is.

“I want people to know that I’m still me. ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn’t changed who I am,” he said.

“People sometimes look at the physical disability and assume you’re not still the same person inside. I still think the same. I still dream. I still love my family. My body just doesn’t cooperate.”
