Ohio University has fired head coach Brian Smith for cause after one season, according to an official announcement Wednesday. The school accuses Smith of “serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the University.”
Several reports on public documents revealed that the 45-year-old coach was allegedly in a romantic relationship with an undergraduate student at the school. He is also accused of being intoxicated while making a public appearance.

While the school claims the relationship was an extramarital affair, Smith’s attorney Rex Elliot claims that Smith and his wife already split earlier this year and were well into divorce proceedings by the time the new relationship began.
He also claims that Smith ended the relationship in question upon learning that the woman was a student at Ohio.
As reported by The Athletic, the termination letter accuses Smith of being intoxicated and “smelling strongly of alcohol” while making a public appearance.
Elliot disputes these claims and reportedly notified the school in writing that he would vigorously pursue litigation for wrongful termination if Smith is fired for cause.
Defensive coordinator John Hauser has been named interim head coach while the school’s search for a more permanent coach begins.
Smith led the Bobcats to an 8-4 record this season and helped them secure a bowl game against UNLV on Dec. 23.
