The Indianapolis Colts are planning to elevate quarterback Philip Rivers from the practice squad to the active roster, allowing them to start him on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, per Ian Rapoport.
It’s been five seasons since the newly unretired quarterback was in the NFL. The 44-year-old came out of retirement this week after Colts QB Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture.
While Rivers has reportedly played well in practice, head coach Shane Steichen knows that game speed may be harder on his body.
“You try to do it in practice as best you can,” Steichen said. “Obviously, the game is a little different. The game speed will be a little different for him, so that’ll be an acclimation period for him if he’s out there.”
The eight-time Pro Bowler was originally a semifinalist for this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame class, but his unprecedented comeback now makes him ineligible until 2031.
It’s unrealistic to expect MVP-caliber play from Rivers, but he might be consistent enough to help the Colts finish the season strong.
