The Boston Red Sox have demoted pitcher Brayan Bello following another disastrous outing against the Baltimore Orioles. He finished Thursday’s outing with 5.0 IP, seven hits, 8 ER, and four strikeouts. Six of those ER came in the first inning.

It has not been an ideal season for Bello. Through 61 innings this season, he has a 6.34 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. He is also striking out hitters at a career-low 15.6% rate. Bello is also giving up 1.48 home runs per nine innings as well as a .310 batting average.
Bello has had appearances from both the bullpen and as a starter. He has had far better outings from the bullpen, posting a 0.71 ERA from the bullpen across 25.1 innings.
After Thursday’s game, Bello was unhappy about being asked between being a starter and coming out of the bullpen.
“First of all, just stop talking about bullpen and starting games,” Bello said. “I’ve always been a starter and when I’ve been successful as a starter, no one has questioned whether I have to be in the bullpen or starting games. So, starting from there, just stop that talk, I’m just having a bad season.”
With Bello going down, the Red Sox will add reliever Joe La Sorsa to the active roster.
