Alabama has defeated more AP No. 1-ranked teams than any program in college football history — 11 wins since the AP poll began in 1936.

Eight of those victories came during Nick Saban’s tenure from 2007 to 2023, including a win over top-ranked Georgia in the 2023 SEC championship game.

Notre Dame ranks second with 10 wins against AP No. 1 teams, most recently defeating Miami in 2026. Miami follows with nine wins, Oklahoma with eight, and USC, Purdue and Ohio State each have seven.

Penn State has four wins versus AP No. 1 teams, most recently beating Notre Dame in 1990. UCLA also has four such wins, its most recent coming against Ohio State in 1975.

Alabama has spent the most weeks ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 — 141 weeks — making it both the program with the most time atop the poll and the most successful challenger of the top-ranked team.
