Victor Wembanyama calls Finals loss the ‘biggest lesson’ of his life

The New York Knicks are celebrating their first NBA Championship since 1973. But on the other side of every series is a team that must battle with defeat.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama appeared disappointed and detached as he spoke to reporters following Saturday’s Game 5 loss and elimination

“I think compared to anything before, this is the biggest lesson of my life,” he said. “The biggest learning moment. I can’t tell exactly what the lesson is. But we’re learning from that for sure. I’m learning, more than any other time in my life before.”

Ultimately, youth and inexperience were major factors that contributed to the Spurs’ loss. Their overall talent was on display in every game, building a double-digit lead in each first quarter.

In fact, San Antonio was in the lead for 72% of the time played in this series, but mistakes and late-game collapses took place again and again.

To be fair, they are a young and very talented team that defied expectations in the postseason. That fact doesn’t make defeat sting any less.

Historically, many of the all-time greats have stumbled and failed to win a championship in their first few seasons. Only one team can win it each year and the margin for error is tiny, something Wembanyama said he’ll take away from this series.

“One of many things I learned is the margin of error was very, very thin,” he said. “Our domination stints — we absolutely dominated for most of this series. But our errors, our mistakes are punished so hard that we can’t have ups and downs like this so much.

“The ups are okay. The downs are the reason we lost.”
