Clippers HC Tyronn Lue calls on James Harden to be ‘special’ during Kawhi’s absence

With the news of Kawhi Leonard being out for at least a few weeks, the L.A. Clippers are in a tough situation to start the season.

Following their 116-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns in their season opener, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue said they will need to rely on the scoring of former MVP James Harden while Leonard continues to recover.

“Overtime really put him in a spot we didn’t want him to be in as far as minutes but we had no choice at that point,” Lue said after the game. “We need him to be special until Kawhi gets back.”

Harden put up 29 points, 12 rebounds and eight assist in their overtime loss to Phoenix. Even if Leonard returns after a few weeks, it’s fair to wonder what kind of shape his knee will be in and what level of play it can sustain.

Either way, Harden will need to increase his efficiency while maintaining his volume if the Clippers want to see serious success.
