The Tennessee Titans released defensive tackle Jordan Elliott on Oct. 20 over an Oct. 15 incident in which he tried to retrieve a gun from his car after a practice altercation with a teammate.

The team’s announcement said only that an incident involving Elliott took place at its facility on Thursday, Oct. 15, and that he was released after a review. “We will have no further comment on the matter,” the Titans said. A team source told ESPN’s Turron Davenport the decision was universally agreed upon.

A source told NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo that Elliott walked to his car in the players’ parking lot after a dispute with offensive tackle JC Latham, and that the weapon stayed at his parking space. Titans coach Robert Saleh confirmed on Oct. 21 that Elliott had tried to get the gun, and said defensive end John Franklin-Myers helped calm the situation.

Saleh defended Elliott, calling him “a good man” and the episode “a call for help more than a criminal act.” He also said “rules are rules” on guns at team facilities, and that he would vouch for Elliott to any team interested in signing him.

The NFL bars all personnel from possessing firearms at team or league facilities, including stadiums, hotels, planes and buses, a league spokesperson told ESPN. The Titans reported the incident to the league, which is reviewing it.

Latham said he had no previous confrontations with Elliott, that the two had socialized together in other cities and that he would like to reach out to him.

Elliott missed practice on Oct. 16, when Saleh said he was dealing with personal matters, and did not travel to Indianapolis. Defensive tackle Timmy Horne, elevated from the practice squad, played 24 snaps in his place as Tennessee won 26-20 on Oct. 18 for its first victory of the season.

Elliott, 28, signed a two-year deal worth up to $8.5 million with Tennessee in the offseason after two seasons with Saleh in San Francisco. He played in five games for the Titans, with one start, and made 11 tackles.
