The end may be near for Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland.
As his fans scour through any and every Cleveland Browns quarterback update, what transpired yesterday was yet a potential tale-tell sign of things to come for Sanders.
Sanders is a fifth round quarterback and the NFL has not been kind to fifth round quarterbacks in its history.
42 Quarterbacks have been drafted in the fifth round since 2000
Just in the last 25 drafts (outside of 2026), there have been 42 quarterbacks drafted in the fifth round. This does not include Cole Payton who was drafted in this past year’s NFL Draft.
Here is a breakdown of how they fared as a whole:
Games played – 394
Games started – 184
Record in games started – 56-128
Out of the 42 fifth round quarterbacks who have started in the past 25 seasons, only two of them have winning records (Craig Krenzel 3-2 and Dennis Dixon 2-1).
Sanders appeared in eight games last season, starting seven (3-4 record). He threw seven touchdowns to 10 interceptions in that stint.
It is possible the Browns believe they know what they have and what Sanders ultimately may end up being in the NFL and cut bait as they elevate Watson to full-time QB1.
Has time run out for Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland and possibly the NFL?
