The point guard position is arguably the most important on a team. It’s the point guard’s job to run the offense and get everyone involved.

Some of the best to ever do it at the one-guard spot are Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, and Isiah Thomas.

Which five point guards are the best heading into the 2025-26 season? Let’s dive in and discover the answer.

5. Trae Young

When the Atlanta Hawks traded for Trae Young on Draft night in 2018, they hoped they had found their next franchise star. Now, trading Luka Doncic away may have seemed like a mistake, but Young has proven himself to be a star-caliber player.

Young has led the Hawks to the postseason three times in his career, including reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021. Despite not having a lot of help, Young has found a way to maximize his teammates.

Young led the NBA in assists last season by averaging 11.6 per game. He also led the NBA in total assists two other times, while maintaining a 25.3 points per game career average.

Young truly is one of the most talented players in the league. This is why he lands fifth on our list.

4. Jalen Brunson

Jalen Brunson had a great season last year with the New York Knicks. He averaged 26.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game while leading New York to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Brunson won Clutch Player of the Year, and was named to the All-NBA 2nd Team. Brunson will be poised to get revenge next season and lead his Knicks to their first NBA Finals since 1999.

3. Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry is still the best shooter in the NBA, and it’s not even close. He was leading the Golden State Warriors on a late season tear last season, as he put up averages of 24.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game.

In the postseason, Curry’s brilliance led the Warriors to a seven game series upset victory over the young and hungry Houston Rockets. Unfortunately for Curry, he’d get injured in Game 1 of the semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves, ending his playoff run for good.

Curry will likely be fired up, ready for revenge in the 2025-26 NBA season.

2. Luka Doncic

The surprise of the 2024-25 NBA season occurred when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Once Doncic returned from injury, it took him some time to fit next to his new superstar teammate, LeBron James.

Once he found his rhythm, Doncic was his old spectacular self. He ended up averaging 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game last season.

Doncic is now reportedly in the best shape of his life. Add on the fact he will have a training camp with the Lakers, and we may be on the verge of a dominant season from Doncic.

1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

The number one point guard is the most obvious choice. It’s the reigning MVP, Finals MVP, scoring champion, and NBA champion, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Not only did SGA put up averages of 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game on 51.9% shooting, but he is also an elite defender. Gilgeous-Alexander is not just the best point guard in the league, he’s arguably the best player, with only Nikola Jokic being his competition.

There you have it, the top five point guards heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. Did we get the list wrong? Who would you put in your top five?
