The Toronto Blue Jays lost right fielder Jesús Sánchez to a hand injury in Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, but it was far from a normal injury.

During the sixth inning, a fan in the stands threw a ball onto the field, striking Sánchez in his right hand. He immediately keeled over in pain before exiting the game early.

While videos of the incident don’t explain if there was any sort of interaction between Sánchez and the fan, it shows what appears to be a baseball coming in from the stands at a high speed.

It certainly appeared to show the 28-year-old briefly speaking to someone in the stands, but he also seemed unaware that the ball as coming towards him.

“We have identified the fan and removed them from the ballpark while we conduct a thorough investigation,” the Orioles said in a statement.

The strange situation is currently shrouded in mystery, but further details will eventually come out as the investigation is carried out.

In 57 games for the Blue Jays this season, Sánchez is batting .287/.324./.461 with 28 RBIs and six home runs.
