It may have taken extra innings, but the Boston Red Sox held off the New York Yankees on Sunday to secure a 5-4 victory and complete a 4-0 sweep of the weekend series.
Sonny Gray had an impressive night on the mound for the Red Sox, pitching a no-hitter until the eighth inning. As the Yankees struggled to get on base for the first eight innings, Boston had better luck in the fourth.

After Wilyer Abreu and Wilson Contreras got on base, Caleb Durbin hit a two-run single to break the seal and go up 2-0.
Meanwhile, Gray racked up nine strikeouts before allowing his first hit on a single from Amed Rosario.
The Yankees remained scoreless through eight innings, but the ninth became a nightmare for the Red Sox.
Boston came up empty at the plate before the Yankees stormed back into it. Jose Caballero opened the inning with a single just before Anthony Volpe was walked.
That’s when Ben Rice was caught out on a fly ball to right field, but Abreu made a bad throw home and Cabellero made it home. Moments later, Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a fielder’s choice and allowed Volpe to score.
In the bottom of the ninth with a 2-2 game, all three Red Sox batters made contact before being thrown or caught out.
The Yankees got a runner on second to open the 10th inning before disaster struck Abreu a second time. He missed a catch on a fly ball from Roasario, allowing Max Schuemann to score and take the lead.
Oswaldo Cabrera hit a sac bunt moments later to help Rosario reach third and Austin Wells brought him home on a fielder’s choice grounder.
Facing a 4-2 deficit entering the bottom of the 10th, Boston came up big when it mattered most.
With Durbin on second, Anthony Seigler hit a groundball single to send him home and make it a 4-3 game.
Boston’s momentum kept growing as Masataka Yoshida hit a double to put a runner on second and third. That’s when Tsung-Che Cheng tied it up with an RBI sac fly to right field.
With a runner on third, Jarren Duran had the biggest play of the night with a line-drive hit to right field to score the run and secure the 5-4 victory.
