WATCH: Red Sox executives speak on massive coaching firings

The Boston Red Sox made massive coaching changes on Saturday. firing manager Alex Cora in a series of moves that saw five coaches fired.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and team CEO Sam Kennedy spoke to reporters on Sunday regarding the decision. Kennedy said it was Breslow who made the final call.

“Craig leads our baseball operation and he’s made several bold decisions and recommendations, and this was one of them,” Kennedy said. “That’s why we took the action we took yesterday.”

Breslow went on to emphasize that the changes were warranted and were made with the goal of increased success.

“We believe in the group of players that we have in the clubhouse, down the hallway, and we believe that a new direction is warranted, new voices, and something that enables us to take a fresh start.”

Former player and current Triple-A manager Chad Tracy has been named the team’s interim manager and Breslow spoke on that decision as well.

“We could be [hiring a new manager]; it could also be that that Chad is exactly what, you know, what we’re looking for,” Breslow said. “We have full confidence in him. We believe that to be the case, but you know, any time a team is not performing, I think you have to look at all options.”

The Red Sox are currently last in the AL East with a 10-17 record, a far cry from where they were expected to be at this point in the early stages of the season.

With several longtime managers and coaches on the way out, the Red Sox are taking drastic measures as they try to right the ship.
