Phillies fire manager Rob Thomson after ugly 9-19 start

The Philadelphia Phillies are firing manager Rob Thomson and promoting Don Mattingly to interim manager, according to multiple reports.

Tuesday’s announcement comes after the Phillies got off to a very disappointing start to the season, at least compared to the pre-season expectations for the team.

At 9-19, they are currently tied with the New York Mets for the worst record in the MLB. Thomson ends his run in Philadelphia with a .568 winning percentage with four postseason bids over four-and-a-half seasons.

Bench coach Don Mattingly will now serve as the interim manager, boasting 12 seasons of experience as a manager. Following a successful playing career, he spent five years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and seven seasons with the Miami Marlins before opting to take a few years away from baseball in 2022.

He joined the Phillies in January and will now have the team in his hands. But Thomson’s firing will need to be the first of several moves for Philadelphia to truly find success.

Amid a cold start, his firing might be the first domino to fall.
