Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has now been fined $5,000 after a heated interaction with a fan during Sunday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, sources told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

As Crow-Armstrong jumped to catch a deep fly ball hit by infielder Miguel Vargas, he collided with the outer fence as the ball rolled out of his hands.

As he was gathering himself, he exchanged words with a fan that was on the other side of the fence. Video from the perspective of someone next to the fan shows Crow-Armstrong using explicit language during the interaction.

He went on to express regret with his choice of words.

“I don’t think that any of the women in my life would think I would say those kinds of words regularly,” he said. “I’m just bummed out about the word choice and a bunch of little kids going to social media and seeing that as well.”

Players are typically fined and sometimes suspended after having negative interactions with spectators and Crow-Armstrong was lucky enough to avoid a suspension. He said future interactions will be different.

“It’s just about being a little more respectful and killing someone with kindness instead of matching their level of intent.”
