Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski knows the difference adding a great wide can make to a team, so when the Patriots traded for AJ Brown the offense is expected to reach another level.

Gronkowski compared the acquisition to when the Patriots aggressively made the move to acquire NFL legend Randy Moss in 2007 when speaking with Sports Illustrated this week.

“I would say it related a little bit — two totally different players — but it related a little bit to like the Randy Moss situation,” Gronkowski said. “Kind of has a down year and when he was in Oakland, [Brown] kind of has a down year last year in Philadelphia, but he still has a lot left in the tank. He’s still going to be a No. 1 wide receiver; he can still take the load of every pass that’s thrown his way and make big plays. There’s no doubt about that… I think he’s in the perfect situation now where everything can thrive.”

When the Patriots traded for Moss, the impact resulted in several records from the legendary wide receiver and from quarterback Tom Brady who threw for a then record setting 50 touchdown passes that season. The team would also post an 18-0 record but would squander the perfect season with an upset loss to the New York Giants.

The standard won’t quite be an undefeated season with Brown coming to down, but for a team that just reached the Super Bowl last season there are hopes he can be the missing piece to take the young roster, led by Drakye Maye, over the top.
