Ovechkin expresses interest in returning next season

Future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin has expressed interest in returning next season, despite the initial rumors that he was retiring. Ovechkin turns 41 in September and is a free agent this summer.

Ovechkin has won just about every award in his career. He has 12 NHL All-Star team awards, a 3-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner, a 9-time Maurice Richard winner, a Stanley Cup, and a Stanley Cup MVP. He has also surpassed 1,000 goals in his career, the second player ever behind Wayne Gretzky.

However, it is unknown if the Washington Capitals will re-sign Ovechkin. The team has missed the playoffs two of the last four seasons, and has made it past the first round of the playoffs twice since 2017.

If it was his last season playing, Ovechkin gave it his all. He led the team with 32 goals and played in all 82 games. However, he only scored five goals on 86 power-play shots, a sign that his famous left circle shot is not what it used to be. There is also speculation that Ovechkin will play back in his home country, Russia, but as of now, his future as a hockey player is unknown.
