For the first time since 1973, the New York Knicks are basking in the glory that comes with winning an NBA championship. Every season, the team that wins it all puts on a championship parade in their home city.

With this year’s parade in New York being among the most highly-anticipated of all time, the NYPD announced on social media that 10,000 police officers will be safeguarding the event.

That number marks the highest number of police officers ever assigned to a planned event in New York.

Throughout the Knicks’ five-game Finals victory over the Spurs, celebrations new Madison Square Garden often became chaotic and violent.

At least 10 officers were injured on Saturday as 63 people were arrested after the Knicks secured the title.

As a result, the NYPD will deploy heavy weapons teams, explosive detection K9 units and drones during Thursday’s festivities.

The rowdy celebrations come in the wake of a historic playoff run by one of the most popular teams in the league. The Knicks burned through the playoffs with a 16-3 record thanks to outstanding chemistry on both ends of the floor.

Millions of people are expected to pack the streets of New York on Thursday as Mayor Zohran Mamdani hands the Knicks the keys to the city.

“From a playoff run that left New Yorkers breathless to a tip-in that will be talked about for decades, the Knicks have earned a hero’s welcome,” Mamdani said in a statement. “We have dreamed of this moment for generations. This Thursday, our city will rise to the occasion.”
