NBA warns Victor Wembanyama for skipping postgame interviews

The NBA has officially issued a warning to San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama for violating the league’s media access rules after Game 5 on Tuesday, per Shams Charania.

After the Spurs lost Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals to the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team spokesperson told reporters that Wembanyama would not be available for questions. A specific reason for this was not provided.

Tuesday’s outing was not a pretty one for Wembanyama, who finished with 20 points and six rebounds while shooting just 4-of-15 from the floor.

His struggles coincided with a rough night for the entire team. The Spurs shot just 40% from the floor and 29% from three in the loss.

Down 3-2, San Antonio now faces a win-or-go-home situation in Game 6.

The NBA has fined players in the past for refusing to speak to media, most recently being Jimmy Butler and Dillon Brooks during the 2023 postseason.

Those players had a prior history of issues and infractions, but Wembanyama’s clean record seems to have helped him escape with just a warning. It’s likely the only one the league will give him for this type of violation.
