The 2025 NBA Playoffs are well underway and despite mixed results including historic blowouts, they’ve been very exciting.
The NBA has been part of a season-long debate regarding the current state of television ratings and viewership, but the league announced Tuesday that this postseason has been historic.

“The 2025 NBA Playoffs presented by Google delivered its most-watched opening weekend in 25 years, averaging 4.4M viewers, up 17% vs. last year,” the NBA announced.
Not only has viewership gone back up, it’s skyrocketed to it’s highest mark in 25 years.

There are plenty of reasons one could point to, including the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers and Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks.
In fact, NBA has seen this increase since the All-Star break.
“I think you saw tremendous competition around the league, teams playing for playoff seeding, teams playing to get into the playoffs, healthy stars, a trade that attracted a lot of attention. A bunch of things happened in the league that generated a lot of interest,” Adam Silver said last week.
It’s becoming clearer every season that the NBA’s viewership issues usually only extend to the regular season, a problem that has proven to be very difficult to solve.
