MLB proposes new draft system with no high school players

The MLB is now proposing a new draft system to the MLB Players Association that would redefine how teams add to their roster.

The league is proposing making high school players ineligible for the domestic draft by raising the minimum age to 20. It would also raise the minimum age for international prospects from 16 to 18.

As a result, the new-look draft would be shortened from 20 rounds to 12 rounds.

Other changes that would take place under this system include reducing the number of lottery picks from six to four as well as capping the maximum signing bonus for undrafted players at $10,000.

“By creating a draft system centered around college-aged players and making most college players eligible one year earlier, more players will benefit from both a college education and an elite development environment while reaching professional baseball — and ultimately the major leagues — more quickly,” the MLB said in a statement.

Much like the other issues at hand during negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, the players oppose this idea.

The MLBPA believes this new system would cost players nearly $1 billion total over the next five years.

While negotiations started last month, the two sides appear to be very far apart on most of the issues being discussed. With the current CBA set to expire on Dec. 1, an offseason lockout could easily take shape.
