Baker Mayfield says he’s ‘not anywhere close’ to deal with Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield spoke to reporters for the first time this offseason on Friday, saying that his contract negotiations with the team are “not anywhere close to what we were thinking.”

“Contract stuff, it’s happening, it’s starting — the talks and whatnot — but not anywhere close to what we were thinking,” Mayfield said when asked about talks of a contract extension.

“We’d love to be here long-term. And as of right now, that’s not exactly the case, but I’m under contract in 2026,” he said. “And the guys in that locker and the staff know that I’m still going to be me. I’m still going to do everything I can to help this team win a Super Bowl. … Everything else take care of itself.”

Mayfield is entering the third season of a three-year extension he signed in 2024 and told reporters that negotiations can continue until training camp begins.

At that point, he says negotiations will stop until the end of the season so he can focus on pursuing a Super Bowl.

He had a solid season in 2024, recording 4,500 passing yards, and recorded 41 passing touchdowns on the season. But injury woes ravaged Tampa Bay’s offense last season and Mayfield’s production dipped in 2025.

His $33.33 million annual salary makes him the 16th-highest paid quarterback in the league.

“It’s time to get something done long-term and I would love to be here long-term,” he said. “Regardless, I think we’ll be here in the offseason.”
