The Dallas Mavericks are parting ways with head coach Jason Kidd after five seasons, per NBA insider Shams Charania.

Mavericks president Masai Ujiri and owner Patrick Dumont ultimately made the final decision this week, opting to move on and begin the search for a new coach.

The Mavericks will now be forced to pay out the rest of Kidd’s $40 million contract extension he signed in October.

“Jason has had a meaningful impact on the Dallas Mavericks, both as a Hall of Fame player and as the head coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals,” Ujiri said in a statement.

“We are thankful for Jason’s leadership, his professionalism and his commitment to the team. In my short time here, I’ve developed an enormous amount of respect for what he has built. He will always be an important part of the Mavericks family.”

Kidd was the head coach of the Mavericks for five seasons, taking over prior to the 2021-22 season. He went on to guide the Mavericks to and NBA Finals appearance in 2024, falling to the Boston Celtics.

That success has been absent since the Mavs made the infamous trade that sent superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025. Dallas has since struggled to find any sort of real success ever since.

Kidd finished his coaching tenure on the Mavericks with a 205-205 record across five seasons.
