The Boston Red sox are in the midst of a difficult season and injury issues are only making things worse.
On Friday, the team sent shortstop Marcelo Mayer to the injured list with a “bone stress reaction” in his left forearm.

“The recommendation of the doctors was if this is something that if you can get off and rest, that would be the best thing to do right now,” interim manager Chad Tracy said.
Mayer himself said that his forearm has been a lingering issue for two months and it eventually became too severe to play through.
According to the team, his status will be monitored on a week-to-week basis.
Mayer lands on the IL over a month after the Red Sox lost shortstop in Trevor Story, who’s been out since May 16 after having surgery to address a sports hernia.
Friday’s news also came amid a recent report that some within the team have questions about the 23-year-old’s mental toughness.
They note Mayer’s alleged willingness to isolate himself from others when he isn’t playing well.
Regardless, the Red Sox sit at just 34-46 on the season and are now down another shortstop.
