The Orlando Magic have fired head coach Jamahl Mosley after five seasons, the team announced on Monday.
While the 47-year-old spent five seasons with the Magic and helped pull them out of a rebuild, they lost in the first round three seasons in a row, prompting the front office to make a change.
The news comes less than a day after the Magic blew a 3-1 lead to the Detroit Pistons and lost in Game 7.
“We’re grateful to Jamahl for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” team president Jeff Weltman said in a statement. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family nothing but the best.”
Mosley spent years as an assistant coach for a number of teams before being hired by the Magic in 2021.
In the five seasons with Mosley at the wheel, the Magic had an elite defense, but boasted a bottom-10 offense.
This lack of scoring punch combined with injury woes only made the first round even more difficult for the Magic. Ultimately, Mosley finished his time in Orlando with a 189-221 overall record.
