LeBron James on NBA career: ‘I don’t know what the future holds’

The Los Angeles Lakers put up a valiant effort against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

OKC officially completed the series sweep and put an end to the 23rd season of LeBron James‘ legendary NBA career. After the loss, James said he’s uncertain about what’s next for him.

“With my future, I don’t know, honestly. It’s, obviously it’s still fresh from, obviously losing [the series]. And I don’t know,” James said. “I don’t know what the future holds for me… I’ll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them, spend some time with them, and when the time comes, you guys will know what I decide to do.”

This season has brought new levels of speculation around James’ potential retirement and he’s maintained a level of uncertainty every time he’s answered questions about the subject.

At 41 years old, James played at a level this season that we’ve never seen a player at his age reach. This season, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 60 appearances.

He’s now set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, so his NBA return would just be the first of two major decisions that the basketball world will be waiting on this summer.

If he ultimately does decide to hang it up, it will mark the end of one of the greatest careers in the history of sports.
