Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin agreed to a nine-year extension just one week after his MLB debut. The deal is worth $140 million, the largest guarantee in Pirates history, and for a rookie.
Griffin now becomes the most important piece for the Pirates’ future. While the team does have National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes, Griffin is an everyday player for the Pirates and is now locked up on a long-term deal.
Griffin was drafted ninth overall in the 2024 MLB draft. He was the first high schooler taken in the 2024 draft and signed his first deal with the Pirates on July 31, 2024. Griffin was committed to play at LSU but opted to sign with the Pirates instead.
So far in the majors this year, Griffin is batting .176 with three RBIs and two walks in five games.
