Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has agreed to a two-year contract extension to remain with the team, per NBA insider Shams Charania.
According to Charania, this new deal keeps Kerr as the highest-paid coach in the NBA annually.
The deal comes after multiple discussions with Kerr and several weeks of deliberation. Kerr and the front office reportedly spoke on a number of topics ranging from offensive philosophy to roster construction.
“It was never going to be about money,” one team source told ESPN. “We had to make the best basketball decision.”
This offseason saw new levels of uncertainty around Kerr after the Warriors finished the season with a 37-45 record. They finished as the 10th seed and were eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the play-in round.
After the loss, the 60-year-old said he understood that his job isn’t guaranteed.
“I still love coaching, but I get it,” Kerr said. “These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.”
But now it seems the front office is still willing to move forward with him at the helm.
He was hired back in May 2014, rather controversially at the time considering he had never coached at any level prior. But Kerr guided them in 2014-15 as Stephen Curry had his first MVP season.
They went on to win 67 games and secure a historic NBA championship that season. His shooter’s mindset bled into his coaching as he played a role in ushering in the three-point revolution of the mid-2010s.
The following season saw the Warriors win an NBA-record 73 games before being upset in the NBA Finals by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Golden State then signed superstar Kevin Durant over the offseason, going on to win two more championships in dominant fashion.
Kevin Durant departed after the 2018-19 season and the Warriors’ dynasty has since faded, outside of a remarkable 2021-22 championship run.
Saturday’s news signals that the team wants still Kerr at the wheel for the twilight years of Curry’s legendary career.
