Jeff Teague makes controversial comment about Magic Johnson

Jeff Teague
Pike High School head coach Jeff Teague reacts to action on the court during the second half of an IHSAA basketball game, Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at Pike High School. Officials ended the game with 4:51 left on the clock after an altercation on the court. Lawrence Central High School won, 69-55.

Jeff Teague was a solid NBA player who played 12 years in the league. He made one All-Star team and won a championship in 2021. This was as a member of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Magic Johnson, on the other hand, was on another level. He made 12 All-Star teams and won five NBA titles. Most consider Magic to be the GOAT point guard.

The two, outside of both being point guards, have little in common. Their names are now being mentioned together thanks to insensitive comments Teague made about Magic, and, in particular, his son EJ.

“He survived HIV and his son,” Teague said on the Club 520 podcast. “What I’m saying is that everything Magic Johnson had to endure. With people just disrespecting him, his family, his wife, everything. Shoutout to Magic Johnson, bro. You one of the GOATs for sure.”

This appears to be a backhanded compliment to Magic. The fact that Teague would claim Magic’s son, EJ, who identifies as a gay man, as something he survived is simply disrespectful.

Magic has not responded to Teague’s comments and likely won’t. He has risen above any hate that has been thrown at him since he entered the public eye.

Magic will continue to live his life to the fullest. That includes being a loving father to all of his children.
