Hawks beat Celtics in opening game of NBA Cup

Dyson Daniels celebrates after beating the Boston Celtics

The Atlanta Hawks defeated the Boston Celtics 117-116 on Tuesday night in the opening game of the NBA Cup.

Without their young star in Trae Young, Atlanta’s Dyson Daniels led the way with a career-high 28 points while Jalen Johnson put up 18 points, 13 rebounds and ten assists.

The Celtics held a one point lead going into the final moments of the game, but with 6.1 seconds left, Atlanta’s Onyeka Okongwu tipped in a missed shot. After the putback put the Hawks in front, Jaylen Brown missed a game-winning jumper as time expired.

Daniels also grabbed six steals, becoming just the fourth player in NBA history to have 6+ steals in three straight games. He is also the youngest player to do so.

For the Celtics, Brown scored a season-high 37 points and Derrick White finished with 31. Atlanta will face off against the Washington Wizards in another NBA Cup game on Friday and the Celtics will host the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.
