Former NFL RB Doug Martin Dies While In Police Custody

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers runningback Doug Martin has died at 36 after a struggle with Oakland police officers, according to the East Bay Times.

The officers responded to reports of a break-in early Saturday morning at a residence in Oakland. They noted that the suspected burglar was experiencing a medical emergency at the time of the break-in.

According to to Oakland police, a brief struggle ensued while attempting to take him into custody before he became unresponsive. An anonymous source later confirmed the suspect to be Martin.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a social media post. “From his record-setting rookie season to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

Martin’s NFL career started off with an impressive rookie season. He would go on to play for seven seasons, all but one with the Buccaneers. He finished his career with 5,376 yards and 30 touchdowns in 84 games.
