Los Angeles Dodgers Closer, Edwin Diaz made his highly anticipated Dodgers debut on Friday. As embarked on his signature walkout to take the mound, his entrance bore shocking resemblance to Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn’s walkout in the 1989 comedy classic “Major League.”

As he took the field and approached the mound, his thrilling trumpet theme kicked in and the lights began to strobe.
The energy in the stadium immediately shifted. A simmering buzz rose within the crowd as Diaz got closer to the mound. It didn’t take long to notice strong resemblances to Vaughn’s walkout in the beloved baseball movie.
Both walkouts boast an aura of excellence and excitement. In the film, Vaughn is a rookie pitcher that’s fresh out of prison. The Cleveland Indians bring him on after they discover that he has tremendous pitching speed but no control.
As he steps out onto the field in a postseason game against the New York Yankees, the crowd immediately comes alive. The stadium was filled with the same rising anticipation that we saw in Dodger Stadium on Friday.
The comparisons are strengthened by the fact that both pitchers are called on for similar roles on their respective teams. Much like Vaughn for the Indians, Diaz is a closer and has been one of the best in baseball for the past several years.
He left the New York mets to join the Dodgers this year as a major offseason addition for Los Angeles.
Shortly after his electric walkout on Friday, Diaz had two strikeouts and made quick work to get his first save of the 2026 season to help the Dodgers defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4.
His walkout was certainly reminiscent of the iconic “Wild Thing” entrance that many sports fans adore, the only question remaining is who did it better?
