Longtime college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale took to social media on Monday, revealing that he’s been diagnosed with cancer for a fifth time.
“Today, my oncologist, Dr. Brown, informed me that my biopsy results have confirmed a diagnosis of melanoma in my lung and liver cavity,” Vitale said in the statement. “I will be starting immunotherapy shortly and plan on winning this battle.”
The 86-year-old revealed last week that he was having biopsies done after tests revealed multiple abnormalities. Vitale has battled and defeated cancer on four previous occasions.
He was initially diagnosed with melanoma in 2021 before being diagnosed with lymphoma a few month down the road. He was later declared cancer-free but was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in 2023.
Once again, Vitale won the battle before being diagnosed with lymph node cancer in 2024. He returned to ESPN cancer-free in February 2025 after a two-year break.
Vitale first joined ESPN in 1979 and has called over 1,000 college basketball games across his iconic career.
