Colts Coach Steichen to Evaluate QB Situation After 42-7 Loss

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said he will ‘evaluate everything’ — including quarterback — after a 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said he will evaluate every position after the team’s 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Steichen declined to confirm Daniel Jones would remain the Colts’ starting quarterback. Jones, 29, completed 19 of 28 passes for 144 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions before being removed with 11:53 left in the fourth quarter and the Colts trailing by 35 points. Backup Anthony Richardson Sr., 24, finished 2 of 2 for 8 yards.

Steichen had previously stated Jones was the starter “unless I let you guys know differently.” Sunday marked the first time Steichen did not reaffirm that stance.

Jones re-signed with the Colts in the spring to be their starter after a strong start to the 2025 season. He ruptured his Achilles last season and returned for opening day 2026. His current QBR is 39.5 — the second-lowest of his career — and his 60.4% completion rate is the worst of his career.

The Colts have made major organizational changes: general manager Chris Ballard was fired, and offensive lineman Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner were traded in the past two weeks. Running back Jonathan Taylor had eight carries against Jacksonville — his fewest in a game since October 15, 2023. Steichen attributed the low volume to the lopsided score.

Taylor said he wished he could have done more and called the loss “an embarrassing butt whipping.”
