Cal Raleigh

Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh placed on IL for first time in his career

For the first time in his career, Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is headed to the injured list, per MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer.

Raleigh will hit the IL due to a right oblique strain that forced him to leave Wednesday’s game against the Houston Astros early. It was initially described as “right side soreness”, something that he’s already dealt with earlier this season.

So far this year, he’s had a very slow start to say the least. Raleigh’s currently batting just .161/.243/.317 on the season and before hitting two singles on Tuesday, he had gone 0-for-38 in his last 38 appearances at the plate.

He’s simply not been anywhere close to the version of himself that led the American League last season with 60 home runs.

The Mariner will reportedly do a deeper evaluation of the injury after they return home on Friday. As both a catcher and a hitter, Raleigh is likely to miss more time than other player’s might with the same oblique strain.

As of publication, there is no timetable for his return to the field.
