Friday night saw two of the biggest stars go head-to-head. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander vs. Anthony Edwards. There has been much talk over the past few seasons of how Edwards is projected to be the next big star of the NBA.

Edwards has become a strong player, but the level he was supposed to reach has been achieved by another star. That star is SGA.

On Friday, Edwards had a chance to show the world that he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as SGA. Oklahoma City entered the game with an incredible 25-2 record. Minnesota, however, has stumbled out the gate, with just a 17-10 record.

The game showcased what we all come to know, and that is SGA is a sensational player. The reigning MVP poured in a game-high 35 points with seven assists, relentlessly attacking the rim and keeping the Thunder in control for much of the night.

But this night belonged to Edwards. Returning from a three-game absence due to foot soreness, Edwards exploded for 26 points and 12 rebounds, saving his best for the final minute. With the Timberwolves trailing 107-105, and the clock ticking down, Edwards drilled a step-back three-pointer over Cason Wallace with 38.5 seconds left to give Minnesota the lead for good.

He wasn’t done. On the next possession, Edwards swatted SGA’s layup attempt at the rim. Then, he forced a steal on the reigning MVP’s final drive to seal the 112-107 victory.

The victory sends a statement: Minnesota remains a serious contender in the loaded West. As the rivalry between Edwards and SGA heats up, fans can expect more fantastic battles ahead.
