Miami Hurricanes running back Mark Fletcher Jr. scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard run on fourth down with 7:49 remaining, lifting the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes to a 38–35 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday night in Chapel Hill.

Marquise Lightfoot stripped North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. from behind as he attempted a pass with 5:33 left, and Justin Scott recovered the fumble. That turnover preceded a Miami drive capped by quarterback Darian Mensah’s 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Malachi Toney with 2:33 left, extending the lead to 38–28.

North Carolina cut the deficit to three points late but failed on two onside kick recoveries due to penalties. Miami recovered the final onside kick and ran out the clock. The Hurricanes improved to 8–0 overall and 6–0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

North Carolina fell to 4–4 overall and 2–3 in ACC play. Miami faces No. 5 Notre Dame next week in a road matchup.
