LeBron James says free agency decision could be delayed until August

Los Angeles Lakers star and NBA legend LeBron James is now an unrestricted free agent for the first time since joining the Lakers in 2018, but he said it could be a little while until he makes a decision on his future.

During a recent episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast, James said it could be August when he makes his highly-anticipated decision.

“I think at some point, up in June, late June, as July rolls around, free agency gets going. As July’s rolling maybe into August, we start to kind of get a feel of what my future may look like, if it’s continuing to play the game that I love— which I know I can still give so much to the game, and play at a high level— or if it’s not. But I have not gotten to that point yet.”

While general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick have both expressed a desire for James to return, the relationship between James and the team has reportedly been under strain for several seasons.

To put it simply, it could be a while before James lets the world know what he plans to do. His family is still rooted in California and his son Bronny is still under contract with the Lakers. But after being swept by the OKC Thunder in the first round, James said winning is still paramount.

“Winning is most important, because you want to be excited about going to work every day. You want to be excited about, like I said earlier, winning the day, and being around a group of guys that feel the same way.”
