Controversy erupts over Atlanta Hawks’ “Magic City Monday” promotion

The Atlanta Hawks will host their “Magic City Monday” on March 16, when the Orlando Magic visit Atlanta. The idea is to blend Atlanta’s culture into the NBA.

A halftime show featuring rapper T.I. is planned, which will pay homage to Magic City. This is the city’s legendary strip club famed for its lemon pepper wings and high-energy atmosphere.

This planned event has sparked some backlash. This includes an NBA player.

San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet has emerged as a vocal critic. He has penned an open letter to the Hawks, urging them to cancel the event.

Kornet’s point is that by honoring a strip club, they risk normalising the way women are treated within the industry. Unfortunately, a lot of abuse, harassment, and violence occur in the industry.

He also made it clear that in his view, the NBA has a responsibility to promote respect for women. This includes all of the women who work for the league.

For now, the Hawks seem pretty unmoved, but Kornet’s public rebuke might still force the league to do something about this event.

This debate underscores the NBA’s challenge in navigating cultural tributes amid calls for ethical accountability, potentially setting a precedent for future promotions.
