Stephen Curry gets “real” on his return to playing

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has been out with a Grade 1 hamstring injury that he suffered in the series opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Fans have expressed their desire to have Curry return to the court as soon as possible, especially since the Timberwolves won Game 2, tying the series at 1-1.

Even though Curry wants to get back out and play, he understands if he rushes it, the injury could become worse.

“No,” Curry responded after being asked if he had a return date. “This is new, and from all that I’m learning about how quickly you can get back, there has to be a healing process. That’s how the body works.

“You can’t accelerate it more than what it’s telling you. It will be one of those. After a week, we’ll be reevaluating every day to understand when it’s safe to even think about playing, let alone how much can you push it.”

The correct treatment for a Grade 1 hamstring strain involves a minimum of 10 days spent taking medications and doing physical therapy. For Curry, getting back to a game-ready state could take longer than that.

Curry’s current situation is not about a hasty return from injury, nor is it about taking unwise risks to push onward to get back out with his teammates. With so much seemingly at stake, it could be very tempting to push forward too soon, just to be available for one’s team.

But the present really is about being as available as possible to medical personnel and doing whatever is necessary to ensure a safe and effective return.

If not, Curry could make the injury worse and it could turn into something that could affect his career. This is something no Warriors fan wants.
