The San Antonio Spurs have selected Victor Wembanyama with No. 1 pick

The San Antonio Spurs held the first pick in the NBA Draft for the third time in franchise history, and even though elite prospects, such as Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller, were available, there was only one choice that the Spurs were going to make and it fits their past history of having the No. 1 pick.

The other two times the Spurs held the first pick in the NBA Draft, they selected two big men who changed their franchise around. First, they selected David Robinson in 1987 and then Tim Duncan in 1997.

The two of these big men helped to bring the Spurs their first NBA title in 1999. Robinson would go on to win two championships with San Antonio, while Duncan was around for all five.

Now, they have selected a big man with a skill level fans and analysts alike have never seen before. Wembanyama stands at 7’2″, yet he can dribble and move like a guard, and some say he can shoot like Stephen Curry.

This past season Wembanyama played for the Metropolitans 92 in the French LNB Pro A league, averaging 21.6 PPG, 10.4 RPG, and 2.4 APG. Will Wembanyama help to bring a sixth title to San Antonio?

It’s hard to say for sure now, but this pick gives the Spurs a fighting chance to return to their glory days. With big men dominating the league again, like reining Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, selecting a promising big like Victor Wembanyama is truly the only way to go.
