The North Carolina Tar heels stunned the basketball world on Monday with their hiring of Mike Malone as the team’s new head coach. While Malone is a former NBA coach with the Denver Nuggets, his name wasn’t part of any rumors or reports regarding UNC’s head coaching search.
A few former Tar Heels were excited about the move.

Former Tar Heel Tyler Hansbrough also chimed in with excitement, appearing on The Field of 68’s YouTube show.
“This is not your typical NBA hire,” Hansbrough said. “This is a head coach who is hungry, and I think he’s going to do everything he can to get UNC back, and I think we’ll be back much faster than what people believe.”
While Malone has very little coaching experience at the college level, he spent 10 years as the Nuggets’ head coach and won an NBA title in 2023.
As he succeeds Hubert Davis, the Tar Heel community seems to be welcoming him with open arms.
